Swancote offers potato education

Hodnet_Primary_06 Hodnet_Primary_09 Hodnet_Primary_03

Swancote Foods helped children at a local school to learn about potatoes.

The reception class at Hodnet Primary School near Market Drayton, learnt about potatoes as part of the farming topic this term. Potato plants were observed in school to see how the crop grows underground. They learnt how to cook with them, making jacket potatoes, mashed potatoes and potato salad. Whilst enjoying a potato play day. Using potatoes of different shapes and sizes within their learning. Potato printing, weighing and measuring with the different potato varieties.

Swancote Foods is an allergen free site!

Concerned about allergens?  You’d be nuts not to consider Swancote Foods!

One of the unique selling points of Swancote Foods is our ability to offer allergen free prepared potatoes. However, we have been unable to call our site truly allergen free because we maintained a contingency plan to make raw potatoes, which depended on a sodium metabisulphite dip.

Given the increasing pressure on food manufacturers to reduce allergen use, and after conducting a range review, we have realised that very few of our customers are using (and therefore declaring) sulphites on their products. We have therefore made the decision to retire our raw production line, thus removing all sulphite-containing products from site.

So, as of April 2015, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Swancote Foods is an allergen free site!

Swancote Foods’ Freshly Prepared Potatoes – Perfect Potatoes When Time is of the Essence

Swancote Foods has relaunched its catering packs of Freshly Prepared Potatoes in a bid to tap into increased demand for pre-prepared potatoes due to a raft of new Government initiatives – Universal Infant Free School Meals policy, changes in Food Information Regulations with regard to additives and a push to encourage British sourcing.

Covered by the Red Tractor scheme, Swancote’s Freshly Prepared Potatoes are 100 per cent British. They are grown by a dedicated group of farmers, and prepared and packed via a fully integrated supply chain run by Greenvale, one of the UK’s biggest growers and suppliers of fresh potatoes. This ensures full traceability from field to fork and that the product is of a consistently high quality.  Available in 10kg boxes which contain two 5kg pasteurised heat sealed bags of part or fully cooked potatoes, they are easy to use and extremely versatile.  Ideal for mashing, roasting and boiling they save chefs valuable preparation and cooking time, and have a 28 day shelf life.

Swancote Foods’ Freshly Prepared Potatoes are also free of additives and preservatives and adhere to the updated Food Information Regulations (FIR) which will be enforced from December 2014.

David Farley, Business Unit Director for Swancote Foods, said: “The scope for this product is huge.  The versatility makes it ideal for use by any large catering organisation from schools to universities, hospitals to nursing homes.  In fact anywhere large numbers of people need to be fed and time is of the essence. We’re very proud of the quality of products and service we supply and as such, when updating the Freshly Prepared Potatoes packaging we have branded it for the first time in 20 years with the Swancote Foods name.”

Swancote was established in 1995 and today operates 24 hours a day, six days a week processing 30,000 tonnes of potatoes a year.  Swancote supplies prepared potatoes including whole, sliced or diced to a broad range of customers for use as ingredients in products such as ready meals, salads, ethnic products, fish cakes, pies, pasties and soups, many produced as private label for the UK’s retailers and for use by caterers.

Over the last 18 months, parent company, Greenvale has invested £2 million in the Shropshire potato processing site updating equipment, including replacing all boiling capacity and cooking equipment, installing new state of the art optical sorters and the imminent introduction of a new multi-vac packaging system on the pasteurisation line.

New ERP System Goes Live

On the 7th of September, after over six months of planning, testing, training and tweaking; Swancote Foods became the second Greenvale site to “Go Live” with a new ERP system, Navison2013. A Microsoft solution, Navision13 was chosen by Greenvale for being one of the most flexible ERP solutions on the market.

Used by over 100,000 business, Navision13 incorporates functions based on many industry best practises and is designed to work for a variety of businesses and processes. Navision13 will continue to be rolled out across all Greenvale sites, replacing the existing ERP system, as part of Greenvale’s IT strategic aims to enhance the IT platform and support business growth. The end result will see all sites running on standardised and resilient business processes which meet the demands of the evolving nature of the market in which Greenvale operates.

Greenvale have partnered up with specialist consultants,  QuantiQ, to ensure the implementation of the new ERP system meets the needs of the business and is flexible for future requirements.

This has been a massive project for the team at Swancote but has resulted in most of the business activities now being managed through the system. It has enabled Swancote to review the way it works as a whole and challenged all colleagues and processes on how best to improve the current methods. One of the clear advantages of the system is a much more integrated end-to-end process and a more robust, less fragmented, more accessible and live traceability system for the site.

It has been a long 6 months but the hard work is definitely starting to pay off now.

Produce Investments Acquires the Jersey Royal Company Limited

Produce Investments, the parent company of Greenvale, has announced the successful acquisition of The Jersey Royal Company for a total cost of £15 million.

The acquisition of this widely recognised ‘brand’ will give Greenvale greater influence over the early / new potato season, and will allow it to enhance its planning and strategy over the rest of its crop as it moves through the harvest season.

It will also strengthen Greenvale’s offering to its customers by providing a wider range of potato varieties to choose from, and will broaden Greenvale’s customer base.

And with the Jersey Royal Company historically selling to the majority of main UK retailers this will give Greenvale the opportunity to cross sell.

The Jersey Royal Company operates from a number of key sites across the island of Jersey and has been established for over 20 years, growing, packing and supplying the internationally recognised and protected Jersey Royal potato brand to a wide number of retailers in the UK. In addition the Jersey Royal Company owns a business in Kent, The Kent Potato Company which grows, packs and supplies UK retailers with locally sourced Kent Potatoes.

Barrie Clapham, Chairman of Produce Investments, commented: “I am delighted we have been able to purchase such a well known business. It takes the Company into a very significant sector of the potato market and we are both excited and confident about the future earnings potential. “This acquisition marks an exciting period for Produce Investments and the employees at both the Jersey Royal Company and the Kent Potato Company, providing an opportunity to continue to develop a business which combines real food and farming heritage with the demands of modern supply chains and consumer passion for this high quality brand.”
